BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN YOUR STUDENTS-TEACHING TIPS

A SIMPLE GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED TEACHER TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A SYSTEM THAT WILL WORK FOR HIM/HER AND FOR THE STUDENTS, IN WHICH VALUES ARE PROMOTED AND MODELED AND TRUE LEARNING IS EVIDENT THROUGH THE JOYOUS ENGAGEMENT OF EACH AND EVERY STUDENT.

RELATIONSHIP

  • KNOW YOUR STUDENTS AND ENGAGE THEM.
  • TREAT STUDENTS WITH RESPECT
  • PAY ATTENTION TO BUILDING COMMUNITY
  • BE POSITIVE AND BE ACCEPTING
  • SPEAK IN THE POSITIVE.  AVOID SAYING “DON’T” AND “NO.” e.g. Instead of “Don’t flip the water bottle” say “Water bottles are for drinking only.”

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

  • AVOID BEING DISTRACTED BY ONE STUDENT WHEN THE CLASS IS WAITING FOR DIRECTIONS.
  • SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS, CREATE CLASS AGREEMENTS FOR NORMS, AND ESTABLISH CONSEQUENCES FOR BEING DISRUPTIVE.
  • FOCUS ON THE NEEDS OF THE WHOLE CLASS.
  • AVOID PUNITIVE, SARCASTIC, AND THREATENING WORDS.
  • MODEL THE BEHAVIOR DESIRED.
  • AVOID NEGOTIATING WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE BEING DEFIANT.
  • AVOID REPEATED THREATS OF CONSEQUENCES WITHOUT INVOKING THE CONSEQUENCE.

CURRICULUM

  • KEEP THINGS MOVING. PACE ACTIVITIES AND MOVEMENT TO KEEP THINGS INTERESTING.
  • PLAN OUT YOUR TIME.  LOGISTICS IS HUGE.  HAVE PAPERS READY TO HAND OUT. KNOW HOW TO DISTRIBUTE THEM. THINK ABOUT TRANSITIONS AND WHAT STUDENTS DO IF THEY FINISH EARLY.
  • PLAN CELEBRATIONS AND MILESTONES.  INCLUDE GROUP REWARDS FOR REACHING GOALS.
  • STUDENTS LEARN MORE BY DOING
